Nanbo Discovery Summer School

The objective of our morning writing workshop is to provide students with opportunities to build self-confidence and develop their writing skills through carefully monitored use of the writing process. The writing process is at the heart of any good writing program for young people with its development of ideas, organization, drafting, revising and sharing of written work. We will stress peer editing and teacher feedback to help students produce quality written pieces in which they can take pride. Themes and ideas for our written work will come from our camp activities that are based upon local Boso peninsula culture. Support from the group and teachers will ensure that each student has a variety of ideas and the writing strategies to develop these ideas. A major goal of the workshops will be to help students experience success as developing writers. Individually, each student will write a piece based on our activities, and then they will be carefully guided through the writing process to thoughtfully develop their piece. Collaboratively, students will work on a newsletter highlighting camp activities that will include the students’ writing. The newsletter will be published and sent home with students to share with their families.

At our week-long residential summer school, campers will work to develop their writing skills using an integrated and thematic approach. Our studies will combine science, social studies and art as we focus on one theme each session. Other activities such as sports, bicycling, hiking, cooking and more, combine with evening activities such as campfires, singing, board games, and special activities.
